Crafting 'Supreme': A Dive into Title Design and Film Poster Design

More on SUPREME title design on my portfolio

SUPREME.

Opening title sequence, end credits and film poster design.

"Supreme," a short film directed by Youssef Youssef and produced by GoldenEggProduction in Geneva, Switzerland, explores the world of drag queens in Switzerland and themes of camaraderie and love amidst adversity.

As the title and poster designer for "Supreme," my goal was to visually capture the essence of the film while seamlessly integrating design elements into the narrative.

I crafted an animated logotype for the main title sequence that blended smoothly with the opening dancing scene. Working closely with the director, we opted for a chrome typographic style, ensuring it complemented the film's atmosphere.

In the end credits, I aimed for a distinct visual style to wrap up the movie. We chose a digital, experimental look for the dancing scene, adding motion graphics to enhance the sequence.

The poster design aimed to convey the excitement of an after-party. It featured the main character, Amber LaGarce, in a captivating shot transformed into a striking visual. The design symbolized the film's themes of depth and transformation.

Behind the Grid: The Art of Minimalistic Title Design in "La Ruche" / "The Hive"

Title design – without grid

La Ruche / The Hive
Minimal title design / intro & end credits

The film "La Ruche" ("The Hive"), selected for the 2023 Solothurn Film Festival and directed by Salah El Amri, produced by GoldenEggProduction in Geneva, Switzerland. As title designer for this project, I focused on creating a minimalistic title design for the short film, which explores the experiences of incarcerated men navigating prison life.

My task was to develop a subtle yet impactful visual identity. I chose a graphic typographical composition for the intro and end credits, drawing inspiration from the Swiss graphic grid system. Each word was carefully placed on a specific grid, creating a sense of emptiness and austerity. This design aimed to mirror the film's theme, where individuals within four walls share narratives, blurring reality and imagination.

The deliberate choice to adhere to the Swiss graphic grid system infused the title design with a sense of strictness and coldness. This approach, combined with an aspiration for elegance and sobriety, symbolizes the tension and balance within the stories unfolding against prison walls.

The title design for "La Ruche" reflects the film's essence, embodying the tension, balance, and cold elegance of the stories told within the confines of a prison. Inspired by the Swiss graphic grid system, the graphic typographical composition visually manifests the film's narrative, ensuring a seamless integration of design elements with the overarching theme.

Flores Del Otro Patio: Unveiling the Art of Title Design and Poster Design.

FLORES DEL OTRO PATIO
title design sequence & film poster design

In the realm of film design, the delicate yet pivotal art of title and poster design plays a crucial role in encapsulating the essence of the narrative. As a title designer for Jorge Cadena's "Flores Del Otro Patio" produced by the Swiss film production company GoldenEggProduction in Geneva, Switzerland, I embarked on the creative journey to craft the intro title sequence, end credits, and the visual design of the film poster.

The creative vision stemmed from a deep exploration of the film's thematic core: a compelling narrative rooted in the expressive activism of queer individuals challenging the exploitative practices of Colombia's largest coal mine in the northern regions. To convey this rich tapestry of emotions and purpose, the design process revolved around the careful curation of typography and color schemes.

Central to the design approach was the selection of a bold, yet refined typographic style. The deliberate choice of font aimed to encapsulate the essence of the film's story, serving as a foundational element in the overall branding of "Flores Del Otro Patio." The infusion of neon, vibrant green, and purple hues not only mirrored the exuberance of queerness but also echoed the vivacity of the DIY glitter and colorful costumes depicted in the film.

The design process was anchored in the principles of readability and typographic excellence, employing a meticulous grid layout reminiscent of the Swiss style graphic design. This design movement, rooted in the mid-20th century, prioritizes clarity and precision, which resonated seamlessly with the narrative's need for visual lucidity.

The poster design, an extension of this identity, leveraged the same design ethos, employing a stark black backdrop to accentuate the highly saturated colors of the typography. The enigmatic central figure, adorned with a mask, served as an iconic focal point, drawing attention amidst the surrounding elements and encapsulating the film's mysterious essence.

The combined efforts in title and poster design aimed not merely at aesthetics but at a comprehensive and unified storytelling approach. The design work served as a visual conduit, narrating the essence and emotional intricacies encapsulated within the film.

The impact of this design endeavor is reflected in the global recognition received, with nominations in prestigious film festivals like 2023 SXSW in Austin, Texas, and the European Film Awards 2023 in Berlin. These acknowledgments underscore the resonance of the design in amplifying the film's message and visual narrative.

Through meticulous typography, vivid colors, and a design philosophy deeply aligned with the film's essence, the title and poster design for "Flores Del Otro Patio" stand as an ode to the power of visual storytelling and its integral role in the cinematic experience.
