Type Animation in 360° Films
for Cee-Roo x Médecins Sans Frontières
For this 18-minute panoramic film directed by Cee-Roo for Médecins Sans Frontières at the Syllepse, Geneva, I was invited to develop a kinetic typography language and animate it to subtitle the emotions of testimonials from women worldwide. This project involved creating animated type sequences that interact dynamically with the surrounding visuals, music, and voice-over storytelling.
The kinetic typography was carefully designed to reflect and illustrate the specific challenges, pain, fears, and joys faced by mothers, particularly highlighting the difficulties of giving birth in some parts of the world. Each chapter of the film features unique type animations, ensuring that the motion typography enhances the storytelling by aligning with the emotional tone of the testimonials.
My work focused on animating the type to serve as creative subtitles for the voice-over narrations. Unlike traditional static subtitles, these animated subtitles were designed to enhance the feelings and emotions expressed in the voice-overs. By using type animation, the project leverages the movement and transformation of text to convey deeper emotional layers, making the narrative more engaging and impactful.
The motion type not only serves as a visual aid but also as an integral part of the storytelling, providing a new dimension to the narrative through its expressive animation. This approach demonstrates how kinetic typography can be a powerful tool in multimedia storytelling, adding emotional depth and aiding in the communication of complex experiences.
The film's immersive experience is heightened by the seamless integration of animated type with the 360° visuals and Cee-Roo's music, creating a cohesive and emotionally resonant viewing experience.
